Newcastle residents are being urged to plan ahead with more road closures scheduled for the CBD in coming weeks.
From 9:30am Friday morning, Stewart Avenue will be shut in part, as crews remove the surface and install essential drainage.
The work will take three weekends to complete with teams set to spend a combined 200 hours completely the upgrades.
Other jobs to be completed in the project includes installing rails and building tracks, upgrades to surrounding kerbs and road paving.
Minister for Transport and Infrastructure Andrew Constance has encouraged commuters to avoid driving into the city when possible and look at other transport options during the closures, which will include June 1 and June 8.
