A major investigation’s underway, after a woman was shot dead at Stockton last night.
Emergency services were called to a home on Queen Street just after 8pm, following reports of a shooting.
They found a 61-year-old woman dead at the scene.
Detectives say the woman answered the front door before she was shot.
Her attacker fled on foot towards Little William Street.
The woman’s 31-year old daughter and 8-week-old grandchild were inside the home at the time, although police say they did not see the shooting unfold.
A crime scene has now been established and officers have formed Strike Force Backhouse to investigate.
They have a number of lines of inquiry, and believe the incident was not random.
‘I am convinced it is a targeted attack for what purpose I do not know,’ Detective Superintendent Wayne Humphrey said.
