The State Government is now offering free asbestos testing to residents in the Lower Hunter.
It comes after a Lake Macquarie home tested positive to loose-fill asbestos, which can release dangerous fibres over time.
The substance was used to insulate a number of homes across the state in the 1960s and 70s.
NSW Fair Trading will make testing available to any house built pre-1980 in the Newcastle, Maitland, Cessnock, Port Stephens and Lake Macquarie areas.
Locals have until July to register.
