Wallsend Infringements Increase Despite Speed Limit Reduction

Wallsend MP, Sonia Hornery is once again calling for answers after the Government revealed that instances of speeding along Newcastle Road, Griffiths Road and Thomas Street have increased.

The limit was reduced from 70km/h to 60km/h along that stretch of road back in March, with the Roads and Maritime Services confirming speeding and crash rates were the reason for the reduction.

However the Government has since revealed that two speeding tickets were issued between 11th March and 4th June 2018, compared with zero for the same period last year.

Ms Hornery says the Government has actually fixed the problem.

“I think this is a cheap way of the Government reducing the speed limit to say that they’re dealing with the problem of congestion rather than future planning or roads,” she says.

Ms Hornery is now hoping the Government will give a proper explanation for the reduction.

“The Government has been really secretive about the reasons why they’ve reduced the speed limits.”

“Hopefully they will explain to the community and commuters why they’ve done this and at the same time I’d like them to talk about what they’re planning to do in the future,” she says.
