Investigations into the Teralba fire that claimed the lives of two people last week, have revealed the blaze was caused by a lithium battery.
The fire broke out inside a town house in the early hour of Friday morning and whilst two people managed to escape, two others were killed, their bodies recovered from the unstable ruins of the building over the following days.
The tragedy marks what Fire and Rescue NSW regards as the first deaths in NSW due to a lithium Ion Battery related fire.
It’s understood a battery went into “Thermal Runaway” a process in which a lithium Ion battery overheats before emitting toxic gases and ultimately exploding.
Latest Statistics from Fire and Rescue reveal there have been 45 lithium battery related fires in NSW so fare this year.
That equates to a shocking five per week.
